ReefSave.org. Lionfish Purse Trap Test in Deep Water 101 Feet - Built by hand in Belize at ReefCI
ReefSave.org in partnership with ReefCI, a non-profit operating at Tom Owen's Caye, 25 miles South of Placencia Belice, has built the first non-weld Lionfish Purse Trap in Belize. This is test trap #21 for ReefSave and #1 for ReefCI. This test, on October 15, 2021 was the third test of this trap, having previously been tested the day before at 30 feet and 60 feet.
ReefSave's mission is to find self-funding solutions for the invasive lionfish problem that has affected the Western Atlantic, all the Caribbean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and recently the Eastern Atlantic off the British Isles. By lowering the cost of building lionfish traps and working to make lionfish harvesting more efficient and economical, ReefSave seeks to make it profitable for fishers to remove this invasive species and sell it as human food. They are venomous, not poisonous, but they are delicious.
Lionfish have no predators outside of their Indo-Pacific range and have devasted marine life to such an extent that in some areas of the Gulf of Mexico they are reported to become cannibals after wiping out all other species. Lionfish produce massive amounts of eggs that are predated in their native range, but not in the affected areas. They prey on juveniles of all species and have been recorded eating the cleaners at "cleaning stations".
ReefSave.org is committed to a long-term project in Belize, working with the LWG and Fisheries to test and help fishers earn income by harvesting lionfish both for domestic consumption and export to the United States. Pending receipt of proper permits for test fishing, ReefSave.org volunteers have and will continue to teach, train and performance test traps in Belize, empowering Belizeans with the knowledge to teach and help others without the need of outside support in the future.
Once permits for test fishing with traps are approved, ReefSave.org will continue to support the Belizean people with volunteers and materials to continue to improve the design and performance of the traps to make harvesting efficient and profitable for both small scale fishers and larger commercial operations.
The Lionfish "Purse Trap" was designed by Dr. Steven Gittings of NOAA. NOAA has a patent on the design to assure that is available for free for the world to use. Working closely with Dr. Gittings since our first tests in Bequia in 2018, ReefSave.org volunteers built the first "No-Weld" purse trap in Virginia in 2019 and built and tested it again in Bequia later that year. These changes significantly reduced the cost of building the trap and the October 2021 tests n Belize, 25 miles offshore on a Caye with no electricity is clearly "Proof of Concept" that these traps can be built anywhere.
ReefSave.org is a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Miami, Florida that relies upon volunteers and donations for all of its work. There is no paid staff. Volunteers must pay their own way to attend these events and help others.
Your support is needed and appreciated. Please make you tax deductible charitable donations to ReefSave.org and choose ReefSave Inc when using smile on amazon. We need every penny to continue our mission.
Our website will be updated very soon and we will be adding more videos on this UA-cam channel.

Lionfish are Indo-Pacific in origin, but have no natural predators in the Atlantic or Caribbean and are depopulating the coral reefs. Lionfish have voracious appetites and reproduce rapidly. This video shows males and females and their stomach contents. Help ReefSave.org systematically remove invasive Lionfish. Donations to ReefSave, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, are tax deductible.

Sharks Swim right at divers

Our last dive on the East side of Grand Cayman is the x-dive: follow the drift along the walls edge over multiple dive sites. As soon as we descended there was 4 reef sharks surrounding us with literally no time to set the cameras. They swam around us often approaching closely from behind as shown in this short clip. Two sharks followed us along the wall, circling in the distance and periodical...

We visit with Carl and he demonstrates how he makes the Shakkas that they use with the drums. The African drum music periodically played in the background is from his band. If you would like to purchase a CD of music or a pair of handmade Shakkas, signed b...

The Wreck of the Ancient Mariner

One of the many great wreck dives in South Florida is Pompano Beach's Ancient Mariner. Not the largest wreck, but perfect for divers of various skill levels and loaded with fish. Dozens of adult Blue and Midnight Parrotfish school on the sand on the starboard side. As we penetrate the interior of the wreck we find thousands of Glassy Sweepers filling interior rooms of the ship. The wreck is sur...

Nice one too Sal. Cool frog fish.
Nice one Sal; just what I was hoping to find to get a sense of what it was like to dive in Tobago.
Cool video. I also really like to dive on the wreck (you can see it in my movie). I congratulate you - you had a very successful dive. Greetings from a young diver.
Very good quality. It really is a thrill to see Yellowhead Jawfish in their natural habitat and hovering over their burrows. thanks for sharing! Cheers EF
Upon looking at your video I realise that I was irritated by how close to the rocks you were. in my mid the rocks might have just as well have been coral. My reaction was knee-jerk and for that you may think me a jerk. After some reflection it is your close proximity to the rocks that bother's me. I'm sure you have seen divers do bad things on the reef. If you were supervising an inexperienced diver who was touching things what would you do to educate them and to make them teach others too?
@MrShaneSunshine The surge pushes you back, you need to hang onto the rocks at the bottom to avoid being shot out the back, There is no coral or other marine life touched. You have to fin like crazy to get through to the next hold before the next surge. People who are experienced scuba divers know the difference between what can and can not be touched. Hopefully someday you will be able to learn about scuba diving and enjoy wonderful locations like London Bridge in Tobago.
You are really getting good
You are really getting better

My deepest condolences for your loss. Your grandfather was a sweet and kind gentleman in every sense of the word, and we truly enjoyed the times we spent with him. I'm so so sorry.
